E10 issues

E10 fuel is still causing problems in older vehicles. The AHMF is planning to undertake an education program to inform members of affiliated clubs the best way to avoid problems associated with using E10 in pre 1986 vehicles.

State Government have or are planning to  mandate the use of Ethanol in "standard" petrol

  • NSW Has mandated that 10% of all standard petrol type fuel will be ethanol: this means that almost all standard petrol will contain 10% ethanol
  • Queensland Has mandated that 5% of all fuel will be ethanol: this means 50% of all standard petrol will be 10% ethanol. The Queensland Government has deferred the implementation of the Ethanol mandate due to the lack of sufficient ethanol.
  • Vic & SA governments are considering mandating ethanol usage. currently several service stations sell ethanol blended petrol.
  • WA & Tas. currently do not have supplies of ethanol petrol.

Users of older vehicle can generally avoid Ethanol Blended petrol by using the premium 98 octane fuel however some premium petrol does contain ethanol. Nationally there is a requirement for suppliers to indicate any ethanol percentage on the bowser.

Unless you know your vehicle is suitable to run on ethanol you should try to avoid its use.

One member has written a paper outlining the issues in using E10 in our older vehicles.
